What we check
- A person approves every partner. Movers can apply online, but no company goes live automatically. Each one is reviewed by our team before it can receive requests.
- Public reputation. We look at each company's Google and Yelp reviews and show you the rating, the number of reviews, and the date we last checked, next to the company's name.
- Service area. A mover is only shown for routes it has told us it serves, so you are not matched with a company that will turn the job down.
- Agreement to our terms. Every partner accepts our terms before going live, including how they may use your contact details.
After a mover is approved
- If a mover changes its company name, it goes back into review before it can receive new requests.
- If you have a problem with a mover you found through us, email hello@smoothmove.io. We read every report, and we remove movers who treat customers badly.
What we don't check yet
We do not yet independently verify every mover's operating license or insurance certificate. Until we do, please check these two things yourself before you hire anyone. It takes about five minutes:
- License. Interstate movers must have a USDOT number, which you can look up on the FMCSA company snapshot. For a move within California, ask for the mover's state household goods permit number and confirm it with the state.
- Insurance and valuation. Ask for a certificate of insurance and for the valuation options in writing. See our guide to moving insurance.
Our guides on choosing a moving company and moving company red flags cover the rest.
Why we are telling you this
"Vetted" can mean anything on a moving website. We would rather tell you exactly what our review covers than let you assume more than it does. We update this page when our process changes. For how movers pay us, see how Smooth Move makes money.
